Cookie Policy
Cookies run on this site. Nothing unusual, nothing tucked away. They keep pages loading right, give us a basic read on how the site gets used, and hold a few preferences between visits. This page covers what is active, what each one does, and how to switch any of it off. Two minutes to read the whole thing.
Cookies we use
Seven cookies run on this site. Some drop at the end of a session. Others stay around for longer windows. Full list below.
| Cookie | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| session_id | Keeps your session active while browsing | Session |
| cookie_consent | Saves your cookie choice | 90 days |
| user_prefs | Holds basic site preferences | 1 year |
| _ga | Google Analytics, tracks unique visitors | 2 years |
| _gid | Google Analytics, tracks daily sessions | 1 day |
| ad_track | Logs ad interactions for performance data | 30 days |
| social_share | Powers social sharing on the site | Session |
Manage cookies
Browser settings are where this gets handled. Cookie controls sit under privacy or security in every major browser, Chrome through Edge. Turn analytics cookies off and nothing about the site shifts in how it looks or works. Session cookies are a different story, some pages load oddly without them. Clearing browser history wipes everything stored from this site in one move. UK readers on shared devices, worth doing that after each visit.
Why we use cookies
To keep the site running and to read what people are actually opening. Five things specifically:
- Navigation: session cookies keep browsing consistent as you move between pages
- Analytics: _ga and _gid show which content UK readers spend time on and where they leave
- Preferences: user_prefs means basic settings carry over between visits
- Ad performance: ad_track logs interactions with promoted content on the site
- Social features: social_share lets you post or link content without extra steps
Third-party cookies
Google Analytics drops two cookies on this site, _ga and _gid. Both work in aggregate, not on individual visitors. Whatever Google does with that data on its own end is outside our reach. Other third-party tools may be running depending on which features are live, and each follows its own terms. To opt out of Google Analytics across the whole web, Google ships a browser add-on that blocks it everywhere, not just here.
Updates to this policy
When the cookie setup on this site changes, this page gets updated. The new version simply goes live, nothing sent out by email. Different wording from last time means something on this page was revised. Continued use of the site after an update counts as acceptance of whatever the current version says.
